Toyota Glanza G MT launched at Rs 6.98 lakh

Up until now, the base version of the Toyota Glanza - essentially a rebadged version of Maruti Suzuki Baleno - was only available in Smart Hybrid form with Suzuki's 1.2-litre, K12N DualJet mild-hybrid powertrain. Now, four months on from its launch, Toyota has introduced a new, more affordable version of the Glanza, which gets the 1.2-litre, K12M engine without a mild-hybrid system and is priced at Rs 6.98 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

At this price, the K12M-powered Glanza G MT undercuts the Glanza G Smart Hybrid by a notable Rs 24,000. However, it is worth mentioning that while the K12M-powered Glanza G MT is more affordable than the Smart Hybrid version, it is also less fuel-efficient. The K12M MT's fuel efficiency is rated at 21.01kpl, while the K12N Smart Hybrid’s fuel efficiency figure is rated at 23.87kpl.

There are two trim levels in the Glanza range - G and V, which are based on the Baleno’s Zeta and Alpha trims respectively. The DualJet Smart Hybrid engine is only available with the lower G MT and not with the top-spec V MT, which only comes with the K12M engine. The K12M-powered Glanza G MT also undercuts the Baleno Zeta variant it's based on by Rs 7,000. This, however, is a much smaller difference compared to the massive Rs 65,000 margin that the Glanza G MT Smart Hybrid undercuts the Baleno Zeta Smart Hybrid by.

As with the Baleno, the Glanza's engine options are BS6-compliant. The 1.2-litre, K12M makes 83hp and 113Nm of torque, and the K12N DualJet engine with the mild-hybrid system produces 90hp and 113Nm of torque. Gearbox options for the Glanza include a 5-speed manual as well as a CVT.

In terms of equipment, there are no changes on the K12M-powered Toyota Glanza G MT, so it gets the same automatic climate control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-tone alloy wheels, steering-mounted audio controls and push-button start-stop system as the G Smart Hybrid.

Since its launch in June 2019, the Toyota Glanza has witnessed decent demand, with over 11,000 units sold in four months. Apart from the significantly lower sticker price for the G MT Smart Hybrid variant, what seems to be working in the Glanza's favour is its 3-year, 1,00,000km warranty, which bests the 2-year, 40,000km warranty Maruti Suzuki offers on the Baleno.

The Glanza is the first product to emerge from the Toyota-Suzuki joint venture, which will also see Maruti Suzuki supplying the Vitara Brezza, the Ciaz and the Ertiga to Toyota in the time to come. Both carmakers are also collaborating on development of hybrid and electric models and will also co-develop a new C-segment MPV that will be supplied to Suzuki as well.
