BS6 Vespa SXL 150 begins reaching dealerships

We've received a few photos from a dealer in Maharashtra that confirm that Vespa has readied its first BS6 product for India. The scooter seen in the images is a higher-spec model, the SXL 150, albeit in BS6 form. Along with the pictures, the dealer has also revealed to us that the BS6 SXL 150 could be priced around Rs 1.25 lakh.

As for what’s different on the BS6 SXL 150, the big change is in the fuelling system that has gone from carburettor to fuel injection. This shift has also resulted in the deletion of the choke and in its place is a chrome cover that hides the opening. Another change that has come as a result of the BS6 shift is the redesigned exhaust system - it’s shaped differently and the tip faces downwards.

If you look closely, you will also notice the speedometer face is now in white instead of black. Another minor change is the new ‘150’ badge on the right cubby hole on the apron. Everything else appears to be identical to the current SXL 150, including the mechanicals like the wheels, tyres, and suspension. We, however, do expect that the headlamp will now be a full-LED unit.

The current BS4-compliant SXL 150 puts out 10.03hp and 10.9Nm of torque. Going by how other two-wheelers have lost out on power with the shift to BS6, it remains to be seen if the same applies to the Vespas.

Our dealer source suggests that the prices for all Vespa models are expected to go up by Rs 15,000-19,000, depending on the model. This would take the current cost of the BS4 SXL 150 up from Rs 1.08 lakh to around Rs 1.25 lakh, making it one of the most expensive scooters in India. The most affordable models from Vespa – the Notte and Urban Club – are also expected to witness a similar hike in cost.

Deliveries for the BS6 Vespa models are expected to begin next month and we should have the final word on the prices and specifications by then.
