Tata Nexon EV new details revealed

Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the all-electric Nexon SUV in the first quarter of 2020. The Nexon EV is going to be the first model to use Tata's recently unveiled Ziptron technology. In the lead up to the launch, Tata Motors has started an advertising campaign called '#TheUltimateElectricDrive', where the Nexon EV is being driven from Manali to Leh, over some of the toughest terrain, with limited charging infrastructure to showcase the features and durability of the compact SUV.

The latest teaser from this campaign has revealed two key details of the electric Nexon. The first is the position of the charging port, which is placed behind the fuel lid, as seen on the Tigor EV. The second detail seen in the teaser is the part-digital, part-analogue instrument cluster which looks very similar to the unit on the Tata Harrier SUV. Exact details of the instrument cluster cannot be seen in the clip, but we expect the speedometer to continue to be analogue, while details like the battery levels, range will be displayed on the digital portion.

In terms of battery packs, the Nexon EV will have lithium-ion cells that feature liquid-cooling to maintain the ideal operating temperature and an expected range of about 300km. The battery pack will be housed in a high-strength steel casing and boasts an IP67 rating – among the highest standards for dust protection and waterproofing. For further assurance, Tata Motors will offer the battery pack and motor with an 8-year standard warranty.

Tata will price the Nexon EV in the Rs 15-17 lakh range. Coming to competitors, the chief rival of the Nexon EV will be the all-electric Mahindra XUV300, which is scheduled to be launched by mid-2020. Tata’s Ziptron technology will also make its way to the Altroz EV and updated Tigor EV, both of which are expected to be launched next year.
