In the latest round of crash tests conducted by the Global NCAP, Datsun’s Redigo hatchback has scored a poor one-star safety rating. The model was tested as part of Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia campaign.
The Redigo tested by Global NCAP was the entry-level variant which is fitted with a driver’s airbag and ABS as standard. The Datsun was given a one-star rating for adult occupant protection, with the bodyshell and footwell area being deemed 'unstable'. Although the head and neck protection offered was adjudged to be good, the poor protection of the driver’s chest area limited the rating to a one star.
For child occupant protection, the Redigo was given a low two-star rating. The static reel seatbelts at the back were unable to restrict the child seat movement under impact, exposing the 3-year-old and 18-month-old dummy’s heads to impact. Additionally, the Redigo misses out on Isofix child seat mounts and a three-point middle seatbelt, factors that lost it points.
Global NCAP also highlighted the absence of a seatbelt reminder on the test car. However, the tests were conducted in early 2019, and the Datsun Redigo has been updated to meet AIS-145 norms. Features like ABS, EBD, a driver’s side airbag, rear parking sensors, a speed alert system and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger are now standard fit. The Datsun Redigo is set for a comprehensive update in March 2020 and is likely to get structural changes as well to comply with India’s latest crash-test norms.
Alongside the Datsun Redigo, Global NCAP also published the crash-test results of the second-gen Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Hyundai Santro.
