Bajaj Chetak electric scooter revealed

Bajaj has become the first mainstream Indian motorcycle brand to enter the electric space and simultaneously returns to the scooter segment with its new Urbanite sub-brand. The first product from this brand is the Chetak - the nameplate returns after almost 14 years. Production for the scooter began on September 25, 2019.

Bajaj has adopted sleek, yet retro styling for the Chetak. The curvy side panels and a wide front apron are contrasted by contemporary multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The front suspension is handled by a single-sided trailing arm unit that appears to have coilover set-up. Suspension duties at the rear are handled by a monoshock and the scooter runs discs brakes at both ends. The wheels also appear to be shod in tubeless tyres.

The electric Chetak also features LED lighting all around and a neat LED DRL that outlines the shape of the headlight. Bajaj has also opted for classic colours, like ivory and gold, which are void of any graphics to go with the retro-styling of the scooter. The Chetak’s seat has a unique cantilever design that adds a touch of class without sacrificing on practicality.

Bajaj has equipped with the new Chetak with a fully-digital instrument cluster that will display a host of information, but it isn’t a premium TFT unit seen on the Ather. Decisions like this are expected to help Bajaj price the Chetak more competitively.

The Bajaj Chetak e-scooter takes on offerings from brands like Ather, Okinawa, Ampere and 22 Motors in India.

We will update this story as more details emerge.
