Porsche Taycan EV completes endurance run ahead of Frankfurt debut

Porsche has continued its development programme for the Taycan electric sportscar ahead of its launch next month at the Frankfurt motor show. The EV completed 3,425km in a 24hr endurance test run at the Nardò high-speed test track in Italy.

Porsche claims that, in temperatures of up to 32deg C, the electric performance sedan averaged speeds of between 195-215kph. Minimal stops were made, with the Taycan only pausing for driver changes and battery top-ups. The Taycan’s battery size is yet to be confirmed, but is said to offer around 435km range on the WLTP cycle.

In order to maximise mileage, the test car was charged using Porsche’s 800V ultra-fast chargers, capable of delivering 400km of range in 15min. The machine will be the first mainstream production car built using 800V technology, making it compatible with international fast-charging stations. Power for the Taycan will come from two synchronous motors, one at each axle, effectively making it an all-wheel-drive vehicle. A power output in excess of 600hp will translate into a 0-100kph time of under 3.5sec.

The Porsche Taycan made its public dynamic debut at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed in lightly disguised form, driven by ex-F1 driver Mark Webber.

The Taycan's styling is heavily influenced by the original Mission E concept, which was designed by Porsche’s former head of exterior design, Mitja Borkert – who is now the head of design at Lamborghini. Details include a retractable rear spoiler, an advanced regenerative braking system and Tesla-style retracting door handles.

We previously reported that the all-electric Porsche Taycan will get a 2020 launch in India. Although its official pricing in our market is still unknown, expect the Taycan to cost an upward of Rs 2 crore.
