Maruti Suzuki will launch the new S-Presso on September 30, 2019. The model will be a new addition to Maruti’s line-up and will compete in the budget-end of the market. However, the S-Presso will be different when compared to Maruti hatchbacks of the past – with a decidedly SUV-inspired design – and draws inspiration from the Future S Concept shown at Auto Expo 2018.
Expect the S-Presso to sport squared-out proportions and pseudo-SUV details much like the Renault Kwid, which it will rival. The Maruti will also come with chunky front and rear bumpers. Spy pics of the car undergoing testing also reveal the interior will sport a central-mounted speedometer.
The new S-Presso will be the first recipient of the carmaker's upgraded and BS6-compliant 1.0-litre petrol engine. The engine will subsequently be rolled out on to other models like the Celerio and Wagon R. Maruti has already updated its 0.8-, 1.2- and 1.5-litre petrol engines to BS6-spec well before the emission norms come into effect on April 1, 2020. If the preceding engine upgrades are anything to go by, the BS6 version of the K10 is likely to produce the same 68hp and 90Nm of torque as the BS4 version, though there could be a drop in overall economy. For reference, the Alto K10 has an ARAI-tested fuel economy figure of 24.07kpl.
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will likely co-exist with the Alto K10 though the new model could be priced slightly higher. Expect prices in the range of Rs 3.7-4.5 lakh (ex-showroom). The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will be pitched against the 1.0-litre versions of the Renault Kwid and Datsun Redigo.
