In the run up to its global debut (and India launch) on August 20, 2019, Hyundai has taken the wraps off the next generation i10. Christened the Grand i10 Nios, the new hatchback will be sold alongside the current-gen Grand i10 in our market. Bookings for the upcoming Hyundai are already underway at the carmaker’s website and dealerships for a token amount of Rs 11,000.
The first set of images released by the Korean automaker reveal that the Nios gets fresh styling that bring it in line with Hyundai’s latest design language. Images of the interior also suggest the Grand i10 Nios will be quite premium, as hatchbacks go. Like the Grand i10, the Grand i10 Nios will be sold with petrol and diesel engines; and for the first time, both powertrains will be available with the option of automated manual transmissions.
The Nios will go toe-to-toe with the hugely popular Maruti Suzuki Swift and the recently updated Ford Figo in our market. So, how does the new Grand i10 Nios stack up against its fiercest rivals? We take a closer look.
Dimensions
As is widely known, the current-gen Grand i10 is available in two guises, globally. While Europe gets the shorter wheelbase version, the India-spec i10 sports a longer wheelbase to enhance space and comfort. However, with an aim to streamline its international product range, Hyundai has decided to engineer the next-gen Grand i10 in a single, long-wheelbase guise only.
3,805mm in length, 1,680mm in width and 1,520mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,450mm, the upcoming Nios is larger than the existing Grand i10 in almost every dimension. It is 40mm longer, 20mm wider and sports a 25mm longer wheelbase. In order to give the new hatchback a more imposing stance, Hyundai has also bumped up the wheel size to 15 inches.
Interestingly, despite this spurt in dimensions, the Nios is eclipsed by the competition in every aspect. The Ford Figo is a substantial 136mm longer and also has a 40mm longer wheelbase. On the other hand, the Maruti Suzuki Swift leads the segment in width and height, measuring 55mm wider and 10mm higher than the Grand i10.

Engines and gearboxes
The Nios will be equipped with BS6-compliant versions of the existing Grand i10’s 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines, making it the first Hyundai model in the country to meet the upcoming emission standards. In comparison, the Swift petrol is the only other model in the segment ready for the April 1, 2020 emissions deadline. While Maruti will discontinue diesels altogether, Ford will be updating its powertrains in the coming months.
At 83hp and 114Nm, the Nios’ updated petrol engine has a performance output similar to that of the existing Grand i10 as well as that of the Suzuki. However, it is the Ford that has the power advantage, with its 96hp, 1.2-litre and 123hp, 1.5-litre petrol engines.
Coming to the transmissions, all contenders (except the 1.5-litre Figo) feature a manual gearbox as standard. However, the new Hyundai is set to ditch the previous model’s torque converter unit in favour of the more economical AMT setup, akin to the Swift.

In terms of diesels, the new Grand i10 Nios’ engine retains its sibling's 75hp/190Nm state of tune. While it is at par with the Swift, the Hyundai is once again bested by Figo’s larger-capacity 1.5-litre unit capable of putting out 100hp and 215Nm of torque.
In what will be a first for the Grand i10 line, the diesel version of the Grand i10 Nios will be offered with an automatic gearbox option – once again, an AMT. This should help the new Hyundai fare better against the Swift, which enjoys a monopoly in the automatic-diesel hatchback category.

Prices
With new styling, increased dimensions, upgraded engines and a longer features list, the Nios will come in at a slight premium over the current model’s Rs 4.98-7.59 lakh price range. We’ll know final prices at the model’s launch on August 20, 2019. But you can bet Hyundai will want to keep the Nios priced as close to the Swift as possible.
