Datsun’s Redigo is now compliant with AIS-145 safety norms as the Japanese car maker has updated all variants of the budget hatchback with safety features such as a driver’s side airbag, rear parking sensors, a speed alert system and seatbelt reminders for the driver and front passenger. The brand had previously updated the Redigo with ABS and EBD back in March.
Due to the increase in kit, the base Datsun Redigo’s price has increased by about Rs 12,000, though the new model’s top-spec variant is just about Rs 4,000 more than the outgoing model’s. The Redigo range now starts at Rs 2.80 lakh and goes up to Rs 4.37 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).
Along with the addition of safety kit, Datsun has also re-jigged the variant line-up. The outgoing Redigo came with a mid-spec T(O) variant, though this has now been discontinued with the update.
In every other respect, the Redigo is unchanged. It still gets the same 54hp 0.8-litre petrol motor paired with a 5-speed manual and a 68hp, 1.0-litre petrol engine that comes with 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox options.
While this safety update means that Datsun can continue to produce the Redigo until the next safety norms deadline – all cars produced after October 1, 2019 will have to be crash test compliant – it is safe to expect a facelift to launch around that time that will not only meet crash test norms, but also pedestrian safety norms that will come into effect in August 2020.
Whether this update will help Datsun Redigo sales improve, especially compared to better selling rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Alto and the Renault Kwid, is yet to be seen. Time will tell.
