2019 Maruti Suzuki Wagon R official images out

The hotly-anticipated new-gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will launch on January 23, 2019. And in the run up to the launch, Maruti Suzuki has released images that show many interior and exterior details of the hatchback.

Maruti is calling the new Wagon R the ‘true tall boy’ and images old and new confirm the high-roof look. The front end is squared-out and the headlights, with their unique kinks, add some personality to the Wagon R’s face. A chrome garnish across the grille is also visible, as are fog lamps on the front bumper. The tall-boy hatchback will carry forward the slab-sided look but the subtle shoulder line does seem to be a light-catching element. Alloy wheels are conspicuously missing. At the rear, the new Wagon R features vertically-oriented tail-lamps.

Going by the images, the Wagon R seems to have taken a step up in perceived quality. The dashboard is a dual-tone affair, with the centre console home to a 7.0-inch touchscreen. The controls for the HVAC system are positioned below the touchscreen and a cubby space with a 12V socket is positioned lower still. Pictured in the official images is the Wagon R’s AMT version, and its relatively high-set gear lever promises to be within easy reach. Steering-mounted buttons and an orange backlit instruments console are also part of the package.

What can be made out from the pictures is that the Wagon R will sport a spacious cabin, which is a traditional strength. However, the single-piece front seats and flat rear seats appear a bit basic.

As we have mentioned previously, the new Wagon R is based on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, which has made the car lighter by about 50-65kg. In terms on dimensions, the new-gen Wagon R is larger than its predecessor in every aspect.

The new tall-boy hatchback will retain the outgoing model’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 68hp and 90Nm of torque. However, there’s the addition of a new 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 83hp and 113Nm of torque. Both engines can be had with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

The upcoming Wagon R will be available in seven variants and six paint shades for buyers to choose from. Bookings for the tall-boy hatchback have been opened and it will be sold from Maruti Suzuki Arena dealerships. The brand is expected to price the model competitively to take on newer rivals like the Hyundai Santro, Datsun Go and Tata Tiago. Expect the Wagon R to be priced in the Rs 4.5-5.5 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom) range.
