Team Indonesia rules Round 2 of AAGC

Despite the scorching heat, close to 3,000 spectators turned up for the inaugural edition of the Asia Auto Gymkhana Competition (AAGC) in India. The event was held at the Raymond Drift Track on the outskirts of Mumbai. A total of 26 drivers from over 10 APAC countries participated in the event. All the drivers were behind the wheel of Volkswagen Polos, which had modified hydraulic hand brakes, free-flow mufflers and were running on MRF ZVTV tyres.

The gymkhana format is all about precision driving and competitors raced on five different layouts. Adding to the drama were fast-paced manoeuvres such as 360-degree spins, J-turns and slaloms. Drivers also had to ensure that the red cones were on the right-hand side of their vehicle; knocking a cone down resulted in a 2.0-sec penalty. In the Solo Gymkhana competition, Achintya Mehrotra made the country proud by clocking a blistering time to take top honours and also became the first Indian driver to win an international gymkhana event.

The AAGC event was held under the aegis of FIA in conjunction with FMSCI (Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India). Gymkhana racing is one of the most affordable means of motorsport and the fact that it can be held even in a parking lot of a mall makes the event more accessible to the masses. We hope more such events are held across the country, which has the potential to acts as an entry point for budding young drivers to start a career in racing, in a safe and economical manner.
