Made-for-India Citroen compact SUV coming in 2021

French carmaker Citroen has already announced plans to start its India innings in 2020 with the C5 Aircross SUV. While the C5 Aircross will primarily be a brand builder for Citroen that’s a relatively unknown name in India, the carmaker’s second product will be its volume driver. The second product in question will be a compact SUV that will go on sale in 2021.

This new sub-4m SUV will be a shortened version of the C3 but will be built on a different platform tailored for India. Right from the get-go, the compact SUV will come with a localisation level of 90-95 percent, and the cost savings, as a result, could translate to an ex-showroom price starting of around Rs 7 lakh. In tersm of styling, the compact SUV will have the same design cues as the C3 and, in true Citroen fashion, styling will be unconventional to say the least.

The Citroen compact SUV will be available with three engine options. There will be a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol in naturally aspirated and turbocharged states, producing approximately 83hp and 110hp, respectively. There will also be a 1.5 diesel – the same DV5 unit that was co-developed by PSA and Ford and used by the latter in its small car line up. The Citroen compact SUV will come with a 6-speed manual gearbox, which again, will be locally manufactured to lower costs. An automatic is expected at some point.

While the Citroen compact SUV will be made-for-India, it will be exported around the world with Latin America being the main market.

Bestselling SUVs, MPVs in India in April 2019

Utility vehicles, which have been the movers and shakers in the passenger vehicle industry for quite some time, have lately been seeing a rough patch filled with sales speed breakers, in the form of rising fuel prices, uncertainty in the longevity of diesel fuel, and high acquisition costs.

Selling a UV, over its hatchback or sedan sibling, rings the profit bells for most car companies, but tough times seem to be coming up for manufacturers. The UV segment, which was accelerating at over 20 percent by end-FY2018, came down crashing this March to a meagre 2 percent, with people becoming conscious of the drinking habits of these heavier machines in times of rising petrol and diesel prices in the country.

In April 2019, the overall PV segment clocked sales of 2,47,541 units (-17.07 percent), comprising 1,60,279 cars (-19.93 percent), 73,854 UVs (-6.67 percent) and 13,408 vans (-30.11 percent).

Quite surprisingly, while the demand for UVs should have picked up during the elections and their campaigning phase over the last two months, demand for big UVs, essentially the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Bolero has shrunk significantly, with only the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Creta and the Maruti Ertiga – all popular urban movers – sustaining their sales even amidst a limping market. In a nutshell, where demand for the true-blue off-roaders was weak, it was compensated by the soft-roaders and the crossovers to take the total volumes garnered by the Top 5 UVs in April to 41,290 units, remaining flat to 41,479 units sold in April 2018. Here’s a closer look at the top performers last month.

At the No. 1 spot is the Maruti Vitara Brezza, which went home to 11,785 buyers and maintained its lead in the UV segment with a 9 percent growth. The compact crossover had sold 10,818 units in the corresponding month last year. The diesel-only Vitara is under Maruti’s top focus to get a petrol transplant as the carmaker switches off the dirtier fuel entirely from April 2020 in the wake of BS6 emission norms.

The Hyundai Creta closely followed the Maruti at the No. 2 spot, with the popular feature-loaded UV going home to 10,487 buyers, an 11 percent increase in its volumes (April 2018: 9,390).

The value-packed Maruti Ertiga rightly secured the No. 3 position and jumped two positions to garner cumulative sales of 8,087 units and registering growth of a staggering 42 percent (April 2018: 5,689).

The much-loved people-mover across fleet and private buyers, the Toyota Innova Crystatook a strong beating, with the MPV recording 20 percent de-growth in its performance. Surprisingly, election campaigns didn’t bring a boost to the Innova’s sales, which were pegged at 5,621 units (April 2018: 7,055) last month.

The Mahindra Bolero closed the tally at the No. 5 position, but dropping two positions from last year. The robust UV sold 5,310 units and also slumped 37 percent (April 2018: 8,527) like the Toyota, a dismal performance considering both have strong word of mouth going for themselves. With safety norms becoming stricter, Mahindra is said to be working on an updated version, loaded with a driver’s airbag, seat-belt alert reminder and parking sensors on the Bolero.

Even as the demand might have slowed down, companies are not giving up on the UV format this easy. While the Hyundai Venue has already been launched, MG Motor India is set to introduce the Hector SUV in June, followed by Kia Motor India’s SP2i Concept. Will the UV space revive once more? We will keep a close watch.

Mahindra to axe 1.2-litre diesel prior to BS6 rollout

It isn’t news that carmakers in India are working hard to upgrade their current engine line-ups to conform to the upcoming, and much stricter, BS6 emission norms. However, the cost of upgrading engines to BS6 is throwing price structures out of whack, particularly so for small-capacity diesels. Tata will pull the plug on its 1.05-litre diesel engines, VW’s 1.5-litre unit will be axed and Fiat’s ubiquitous 1.3 Multijet – which powers a whole host of Marutis – is also set to bow out by April 1, 2020. And now, Mahindra has hinted that the KUV100 NXT’s 1.2-litre diesel is also on its way out.

Speaking at Mahindra and Mahindra’s annual financial results announcement, Mahindra MD, Pawan Goenka, said diesels of 1.5-litre capacity and above will continue but the future for smaller diesels is under a cloud. Mahindra’s smallest engine – the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder diesel – solely powers the KUV100 NXT, which doesn’t sell in large enough numbers to justify the investment to upgrade it to BS6-spec. Goenka did state that in the broader scheme of things, he expects some shift to petrols even in larger vehicles and reiterated Mahindra is flexible enough to cater to petrol-heavy demand, should the market move in that direction.

Mahindra has a fairly large range of diesel engines. There’s the 1.2-litre three-cylinder, as well as a 1.5-litre three-cylinder that’s available in various states of tune, depending on whether it’s used in the Bolero or the TUV300. A Renault-sourced 1.5-litre unit is used in the Verito, and Mahindra also has its own 1.5-litre diesel that powers the XUV300 and Marazzo; this engine was also awarded the Engine of the Year at the 2019 Autocar Awards. Mahindra’s higher-displacement diesel engines include the 2.2-litre four-cylinder unit that powers the XUV500 and the Scorpio, and then there’s a variety of 2.5-litre diesel engines as well.

2019 BMW X1 facelift revealed

BMW’s most popular global SUV, the X1, has been given a mid-life makeover, bringing tweaked looks and – for the first time outside of China – a plug-in hybrid version.

Given that BMW shifted nearly 2,87,000 examples of the X1 last year, leading the segment, it’s no surprise that visual updates aren’t the most extensive.

The kidney grille is now larger, in line with its newer siblings, while reshaped lights and bumpers, front and rear, aim to freshen the X1’s look. Larger diameter exhaust tailpipes, growing from 70mm to 90mm, complete the redesign.

The M Sport variants also have added styling changes to differentiate them more than before, including a 10mm drop in ride height, larger air intakes and body-coloured styling additions.

Features such as larger brake discs for the M-Sport variants are also added, alongside new colour and wheel choices for the rest of the range.

Interior revisions are limited to new materials and upholstery, targeted at boosting perceived quality. New contrast stitching is available for the higher-end trim variants, while three new upholstery options feature.

An optional lighting package brings gives the cabin an ambient glow with six colour choices. The 6.5-inch, 8.8-inch and 10.25-inch (depending on spec) infotainment screens are unchanged.

The big story under the bonnet is the introduction of the xDrive25e plug-in variant. It uses a 124.7hp/219.6Nm three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 95.3hp/151.8Nm electric motor powering the rear wheels for four-wheel drive.

A 9.7kWh battery pack gives a claimed 49.8km electric-only range. Fuel economy and emissions data is yet to be confirmed.

Alongside that, BMW has added a top-flight 231.1hp xDrive25i X1 variant, which is capable of doing 0-100kph in 6.5sec.

BMW India has the pre-facelift X1 on sale in with two engine options - a 192hp, 2.0-litre petrol and a 190hp, 2.0-litre diesel - priced from Rs 35.20 lakh to Rs 45.70 lakh (ex-showroom, India). There is no word on when the X1 facelift, and its hybrid engine option, will come to India, where it will rival the Mercedesz gLA, Volvo XC40 and Mini Countryman.
