Audi SQ2 SUV unveiled ahead of Paris debut

Audi has revealed the SQ2 hot SUV ahead of its official debut at the Paris motor show.

The car’s turbocharged 300hp, 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is the same as seen in the Audi S3. It is closely related to the engine in the Volkswagen Golf R and upcoming T-Roc R, as well as the Seat Leon Cupra R. On the SQ2, the engine produces the same 400Nm of torque as the Golf R. It has a claimed 0-100kph time of 4.8sec and a top speed of 250kph. Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive system and a DSG automatic gearbox are standard.

These acceleration figures put the SQ2 0.1sec ahead of the BMW X2 M35i – also to be shown in at the Paris show. The two cars share the same limited top speed; although the X2 has a 7hp and 50Nm advantage over the SQ2.

The hot rival to the Mini Countryman can be identified by the four exhaust pipes at its rear, as well as the discreet SQ2 badging and a more aggressive body kit, which includes a rear spoiler. As a whole, the car has been lowered 20mm over the standard Q2 and has 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options of offer.

Inside, the SQ2 gets a black headliner and black leather-and-Alcantara seats embossed with ‘S’ logos and extra bolstering that offers support in faster corners. The dashboard gets Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital display as an option, but traditional analogue dials and an infotainment screen are standard fitment, as is a premium sound system.

Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Jam Assist are offered as standard, which means that the car can steer, brake and accelerate itself at speeds of up to 64kph – provided that the driver still has hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

There’s no word on pricing yet. This will likely be revealed later in the year. Emissions and fuel-economy data haven’t been released, either.

With the arrival of the SQ2, the only models in Audi's range that haven’t received an S performance variant are the recently launched E-tron, A7, A8 and the new Q3. An RS Q2 is expected to join the range further into the car’s lifetime and may offer as much as 367hp from the RS3’s five-cylinder engine.

TVS Jupiter Grande spotted prior to launch

TVS is gearing up to introduce a new variant of its popular scooter, the Jupiter, before the festive season. The upcoming TVS Jupiter Grande 5G has been spotted at a few dealerships prior to its official launch in the next few weeks.

While styling of the upcoming scooter is similar to the standard Jupiter, it has been equipped with new features such as an LED headlight (a first for any TVS scooter) and a semi-digital instrument console with a digital display for the fuel gauge, trip meter and clock. In addition, the Jupiter Grande’s seat cover gets a quilt-like finish with the inner panels finished in beige. It’s also likely that TVS will introduce new colour options on the Jupiter Grande. While the drum brake variant sports conventional alloy wheels, the disc brake variant will be offered with machined alloy wheels and an adjustable monoshock unit.

The Jupiter Grande will carry forward features such as an external fuel filler cap, reserve fuel indicator, under seat mobile charger, parking brake and pass light switch as seen on the standard offering.

Powering the Jupiter Grande is the same motor as seen on the standard Jupiter. The 109.7cc, single-cylinder engine is rated at 8hp and 8Nm of peak torque and TVS claims a fuel efficiency figure of 62kpl. In terms of pricing, the Jupiter ZX Disc retails for Rs 56,488 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and it’s likely that the upcoming Jupiter Grande to carry a premium of around Rs 1,000-1,500.

Hamilton wins Russian GP as Mercedes imposes team orders

Lewis Hamilton now has a firm grip on the 2018 Formula 1 drivers’ title after cruising to victory at the Sochi Autodrom. However, the British drivers’ eighth victory of the season was a controversial one owing to team orders imposed by Mercedes.

Pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas held on to the race lead off the line. Behind him, Vettel’s strong start allowed him to attack Hamilton through the Turn 1 kink, but Hamilton regrouped in Bottas' slipstream and rebuffed the Ferrari. Hamilton had such a good run behind his team-mate that he closed right up to and locked up slightly under braking for Turn 2, which allowed Vettel to attack again through the ensuing long left-hander, but Hamilton held the place.

Elsewhere, after having to start in 19th place due to engine penalties, Max Verstappen charged through the field and was already up to fifth place by lap 7, on the more durable soft tyres.

Bottas was the first of the frontrunners to head into the pits on lap 12 and was followed by Vettel on the next lap. Ferrari attempted an undercut by pitting Vettel earlier and that allowed him to momentarily gain a position as Hamilton re-joined the track behind him after his pit stop. But Hamilton was quick to respond and was in Vettel's slipstream two laps later on the run Turn 2, eventually passing the Ferrari driver on the inside of Turn 4.

Hamilton caught and followed Bottas for several laps, with the latter being backed up by the long-running Verstappen. With the drivers’ championship in mind, Mercedes acted on lap 25, telling Bottas to slow down and let Hamilton through at Turn 13, which he did.

Hamilton reported engine "hesitations" but as those concerns appeared to ease he attacked Verstappen on lap 42, but the Red Bull driver defended his position before finally diving into the pits a lap later.

From then on, the Mercedes duo cruised to a comfortable one-two, followed by Vettel in third place. Kimi Raikkonen was a muted fourth after Verstappen lacked the pace on fresh ultrasofts to mount a challenge in the closing stages. Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo made it up to sixth in the second Red Bull, having been passed by Verstappen at the start and failing to replicate the speed of his team-mate's early charge after sustaining front wing damage on the opening lap.

Charles Leclerc produced a fine drive to take seventh, having ran as high as fifth early on. He was followed by Kevin Magnussen in eighth place, who had to fend off the Force India duo of Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez for much of the race. Force India initially ordered Ocon to let his team-mate through to allow Perez to try and pass Magnussen. However, the duo one again swapped back positions after Perez was unable to pull off a pass.

The race featured only two retirements: Toro Rosso team-mates Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley suffered independent spins almost simultaneously but made it back to the pits to retire their cars having suffered brake failures.

Hamilton’s victory means he now has a strong 50 points advantage over Vettel in the drivers’ championship, with just five races remaining.

Elon Musk resigns as Tesla chairman, but remains CEO

Tesla founder Elon Musk will step down from his role as the firm’s chairman and pay a $20 million (around Rs 146 crore) penalty as part of a settlement with the American Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over a charge of securities fraud. Musk will remain as CEO of the firm, which will also pay a penalty of $20 million.

The SEC had charged Musk with fraud in response to his tweet in August suggesting he could take Tesla private at $420 (around Rs 30,581) a share, a substantial premium at the time, and had secured funding to do so. The SEC claimed that Musk knew the funding was not secured.

The tweet caused Tesla’s stock price to jump and, according to the SEC, “led to significant market disruption.” The SEC also said that Tesla had not put any procedures in place to determine that Musk’s tweets about the company were accurate or complete.

Musk initially said the SEC’s charges were “unjustified” but has now reached an agreement with the body to settle the charges. Under the deal, Musk will step down as Tesla’s chairman, to be replaced by an independent chair. Musk will be ineligible to be re-elected chair for three years.

Tesla has also agreed to appoint two new independent directors to its board, establish a new committee of independent directors and put in place additional controls over Musk’s communications.

By settling, Musk neither admitted or denied misleading investors.

Numerous reports suggested Musk and Tesla had declined to settle the case when the SEC initially brought the charges, and there have been no comment from either on the deal at time of writing. As CEO, Musk will essentially remain in day-to-day charge of the firm, but he will likely face more oversight and control from the board and the new chairman. As Tesla's largest shareholder, Musk is likely to retain a seat on the board and have influence in determining his successor as chair.

By allowing Musk to stay on as CEO under the settlement, the SEC has avoided the possibility that removing Musk from Tesla could cause investors to lose faith in the company's ability to thrive without him, potentially leading to more instability in its share price and value.

The $40 million of penalties paid by Musk and Tesla will be distributed to investors harmed by Musk’s tweet.

Stephanie Avakian, the co-director of the SEC’s enforcement division, said: “The total package of remedies and relief are specifically designed to address the misconduct at issue by strengthening Tesla’s corporate governance and oversight in order to protect investors.”

“The resolution is intended to prevent further market disruption and harm to Tesla’s shareholders.”

According to CNN, the US Department of Justice is also investigating if Musk's tweet constituted a criminal activity. The SEC is also continuing to investigate a separate case relating to Tesla's production goal claims.

Mercedes-AMG confirms ‘One’ as hypercar name

Mercedes-AMG has confirmed ‘One’ as the name of the production version of its upcoming hypercar and it will sit on the top on Mercedes-AMG’s road-car range, as its name signifies.

The name is also a reference to the Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 engine used in the car. The powertrain itself has undergone hundreds of hours of testing in British facilities to meet what Mercedes-AMG refers to as "the immense challenge" of making it ready for series production. The Formula 1-derived 1.6-litre V6 will produce more than 1,014hp, although the specific figure is yet to be confirmed.

Earlier this year the Aston Martin Valkyrie rival was shown for the first time on the move and in near-production form. The concept version was revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The brand has now revealed that the car’s active aerodynamics culminate on its retractable rear wing, with two stages of extension giving maximum downforce in the car’s most hardcore Race mode.

Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers told our sister publication, Autocar UK, that the downforce generated will be “approximately half the weight of the car” and confirmed that the One will weigh between 1,300kg and 1,400kg. Taking the 1,350kg midpoint, this would indicate that the car is likely to produce around 675kg of aerodynamic downforce. The lap time will be assisted by this, despite the car not having an enormous fixed rear wing such as that on the recently revealed McLaren Senna, which produces a maximum downforce of 800kg.

The One is being tested on "closed-off test grounds and race tracks", with images showing it on the handling circuit at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.

Moers has previously said it "makes sense" to build the hypercar in Britain, where the brand's Formula 1 team is based. The car's F1-derived powertrain is to be built at the racing squad's Brixworth base, but it is being adapted for road use by AMG. Moers admitted that the process is extremely challenging during a conversation at the New York motor show. "That powertrain is really complicated," he said. "It's good, but not good enough yet."

While not an immediate priority, Moers revealed that it's "reasonable to speculate" the One will eventually try to set a new Nürburgring lap record. He wouldn't be drawn on the car’s simulated Nürburgring lap time, but AMG is known to have studied past lap records in detail, including the outright record of Stefan Bellof, who lapped the circuit in 6min 11sec in a Porsche 956 sports car in qualifying for the 1,000km race there in 1983. Bellof also set a race lap record of 6min 25.9sec in the same car.

The production road car record is currently 6min 44.97sec, held by the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. Moers did say, however, that the biggest challenge he faced in extracting the best lap time from the One would be “finding the right driver” to accomplish the feat.

It's not clear at what speed the Project One's maximum downforce figure is developed; in the Senna, it comes at 155mph. Like the Senna and Ford GT, the One’s driver will be able to lower the car for track driving, increasing the amount of downforce. This is just one of many facts about the hypercar that have emerged since its launch at last year's Frankfurt motor show.

Moers stated very clearly that the 1,014hp output quoted for the car is just what the 1.6-litre V6 hybrid engine is developing on the dynamometer at present and that its actual output will be that figure “plus, plus, plus”. Ultimately, he said he expected it to be below 1,115hp, but it's not yet known by how much.

According to Andy Cowell, head of Mercedes’ High Performance Powertrains division, the biggest challenges with the engine are not keeping it reliable or adapting to road car use; it will idle in a Dubai traffic jam in mid-summer without overheating. Instead, he cited emissions and persuading an engine that usually requires a team of engineers to operate “to start at the press of a button, in all weather conditions, regardless of how long it’s been left”.

It also now seems that, while the engine will be produced in Brixworth, Mercedes’ F1 team will be involved largely on a consultancy basis. Even so, almost all the other important components will be made in the UK, including the bespoke robotised manual eight-speed gearbox that Xtrac is developing, as well as the tub and bodywork, which will be produced by an as-yet-unnamed third party.

Moers confirmed that, despite the car’s price of approximately £2.4 million (approximately Rs 22.8 crore), AMG received 1,100 requests from credible customers for the 275 units that will be built.

Ford Freestyle gets updates

Ford has updated its Freestyle cross-hatch by offering a few minor changes, including a new exterior paint shade called ‘Ruby Red’. The updated car will also get body coloured ORVMs as standard across the range along with adjustable rear headrests, which were not part of the equipment when the car was launched in April 2018.

The Freestyle gets Ford’s new naturally aspirated, 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine which makes 96hp and 120Nm of torque and the tried-and-tested 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TDCi diesel motor that puts out 100hp and 215Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

These additions to the Freestyle have seen prices of the base trim increase by about Rs 20,000. The cross-hatch is now priced from Rs 5.23 lakh to Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Ford Freestyle competes with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the Tata Tiago NRG.

Besides updating the Freestyle to cash in on the festive season, Ford will also launch the facelift for its compact sedan, the Aspire, on October 4. The new model will share quite a lot with the Freestyle in terms of design and equipment, along with its powertrain.
